Square metre beds
This year we plan to continue the Square Metre bed trial started in 2009. This will include information about how to prepare four square metre beds using no-dig gardening methods. The idea will be to show how quick and easy it is to start a square metre food garden.
Again, inputs and outputs from both blocks of beds will be monitored and recorded.
Composting kitchen waste
The second trial will be to find a cheap and reliable way of composting kitchen waste. With many commercial composters on the market, costing at lest £100 and up to £400, there has to be a cheaper and more eco friendly way of dealing with kitchen waste.
Why bother when a lot of councils provide green bins? Because all plants removed from the garden results in nutrients lost. If all waste material is returned to the soil through composting overall soil fertility is improved.
