Croal spot fungus

While working in the fruit cage recently I found a dead branch that had broken off one of the blackcurrant bushes. It was covered in bright orange spots which I looked up and identified as coral spot fungus. It’s very common on dead and decaying wood and can affect many trees and bushes.  Sometimes it can be seen on the ends branches that have died off. This can lead to infection in living tissue in which case the whole bush should be removed.

The general advice is to make sure you pick up all prunings and keep the area around fruit bushes clear of debris. Do not compost any affected.
