Clitheroe flower beds could become ‘edible gardens’

Local councillors in Clitheroe have proposed turning town centre flower bed displays into edible gardens. The idea was first suggested by Transition Towns Clitheroe. The Lancashire Telegraph say: “As part of the project floral display boxes would be filled with vegetables which could be picked by local people.”

This is the sort of initiative that should become the norm. Not only does it encourage people to grow food it gives a clear message that food is more important than flowers, a point of view that is likely to generate the most objections to the project!

Maybe it is time to have a new award, ‘Britain in veg’ rather than ‘Britain in bloom’? I wonder what the RHS will think of that idea?
